Evolution is what has created the human species, so what makes one species more successful than another?  It is the ability for a species to reproduce more successfully and to fill a wide range of evolutionary niches.  If it only survives in one niche, it can become extinct when that niche changes or if it out competed in that niche.  So what could evolve that would allow a species to be very successful?  The one word answer is "Intelligence". (Heile, 2015)
